A web browser engine built entirely from scratch in Zig
cwbrowser is a desktop web browser built on a rendering engine written completely from scratch in Zig. Instead of using Chromium, WebKit, or Gecko, its HTML parser, CSS cascade, layout engine, and paint pipeline are all hand-written code. The only borrowed component is Google's V8, which handles JavaScript, wired to the from-scratch DOM.
It is the result of two years of solo engineering and is designed to be lightweight and fast, measuring about 2x faster than Chrome in early testing. It also passes the Acid3 conformance test with a perfect 100/100, proving that a browser engine rebuilt today can meet modern standards.
The public preview build for macOS on Apple Silicon is coming soon. The download is not posted yet, but interested users can email to be notified when the beta is available.
The tokenizer, DOM, CSS parser and cascade, box-model layout, and painting stage are all original code written in Zig.
The browser does not use any mainstream rendering engine; only the JavaScript VM is borrowed from Google's V8.
Passes the Acid3 conformance test with a perfect score, rendered by its own engine.
Early benchmarking on the same hardware shows roughly 2x the speed of Google Chrome.
The engine uses Zig's manual memory management with no garbage collector and no hidden runtime, keeping it small and fast.
Embeds Google's V8 — the same VM used in Chrome and Node — and binds it to the from-scratch DOM.
The rendering engine was built from nothing over two years of solo work.
